remember the 2 MD vinnie cover stories,in which vinnie(in the first of these interviews,ithink in '87-88) was mentioning he wanted to take lessons to work out some issues w. his left hand.then was asked in his consecutive cover story (his early string(oops sting)days) what he worked on in that time.his answer concerning how he places his fingers still confuses me.any way i know that he studied w. gary chaffee.but does any one out there know of his other teachers,and what their expertise is?

I think that I read somewhere that Vinnie also studied with Alan Dawson while he was at Berkley. I may be wrong.

Yeah, it seems Vinnie DID study w/ Alan D [awa Chaffee] @ Berklee, awa a cat named Allaraka Khan [?] - altho I might be confusing that last guy w/ Casey Scheuerell's studies .... also, while he was there he hung out a bit w/ Stv Smith, Kenwood Dennard, & it seems Joe Morello [?] accord'g to what he implied during the infamous 1984 clinics w/ Tim Landers [bass] .... another interest'g twist to the Berklee-days saga [& some1 validate this for me if they've heard this] is that the teacher/teachers there, after a yr. or so, told him to 'get out of here ... we can't teach you anything more here,' or something like that ... urban myth or fact?! [I forget where I heard that 1 ....]

Vinnie studied with Richard Wilson. From what I've read about him he's an "uncosmic" Freddie Gruber. He's really into a more concrete physics approach to drumming. Levers, balance, the whole Archimedes bag basically. There was an article, I think, in Modern Drummer about him a few years ago.

To specifically answer Beats question, I read that Vinnie studied with a guy called Dick Wilson and Vinnie say's 'I spent some time with Jim Chapin'. I take that to mean that he didn't specifically study with Chapin, just hung out with him a bit.

I believe that Vinnie also studied with Murray Spivack, who also taught Richard Wilson. In the MD article on Wilson there is a sidebar where Vinnie talks about what he learned from wilson - the entire article is an interesting read.

Chad Wackerman told my friend a story at a clinic about how all the big dudes go visit Joe Morello from time to time for consultations. Apparently, he tears many of these name players apart, hands wise. When Vinnie goes, however, he's just like, "yeah your hands look great!" I thought that was pretty funny.
